Rūaumoko (middle earth) is the son within the womb of Papatuanuku, and he rolls over occasionally to remind us that we each have a part to play in looking after and treasuring his mother (Earth).

Kaokao - Annabelle Buick

Annabelle Buick is a contemporary visual artist currently based in Auckland. Born in Tauranga (Bay of Plenty), Annabelle is of Ngati Pukenga and Scottish descent. She studied Craft & Design in Wellington and works with a variety of mediums to create innovative artwork for contemporary interiors. Her current practise investigates the origins of and concepts of “pattern”. This woven panel is a variation of a Maori design called Kaokao. The kaokao (bend or side of the ribs) design are formed by zig zag lines that create chevrons that can be horizontal or vertical, open with paces or closed repetitive lines. It is sometimes seen to represent the sides and arms of warriors as if caught in haka action. Buick has been exhibiting and selling her work since 2001, her work is in collections nationwide and as far away as Dubai, Israel, Hawaii, Tahiti and UK.  She also was a Finalist, National Contemporary Art Awards 2013.

In honour of Helen Clark

This pair of art canvasses, signed by Helen Clark, were designed to honour her illustrious Parliamentary career using selected quotes from her maiden and valedictory speeches.  The limited edition pair is based on an original set of 12 A1 Art Canvasses from mid-2011.  Only a few personally signed sets of this size are known to exist.

The beach is an easy 2 block walk away, with QEII park just another block.  There are some great cafes in Raumati South, both within walking distance, and the local chip shop and dairy provide all you need for a chilled out Friday night in the fresh coastal air.

Painting by Greer Twiss

Over a career of more than 40 years, Greer Twiss has remained one of New Zealand’s most prominent public sculptors. He graduated from the Elam School of Fine Arts, Auckland, New Zealand in 1959. Then travelling to Britain in 1965 and studying lost-wax processes. He returned to New Zealand, casting small bronze works influenced by Henry Moore. In 1966 he was appointed tutor at the Elam School of Fine Arts.  

Throughout his career his work has retained a commitment to the figure and an exploration of sculpture’s full potential to engage with volume and space. In the late 1960s, he exhibited a series of Pop-Art inspired beach girls, casting shadows that humorously referenced New Zealand’s ‘hard-edged’ light and since the 1980s he has considered the natural/manmade environment, casting sculptures of indigenous birds. Twiss was a contributing sculptor for the Seoul Olympics (1988).

Since his childhood in the UK, Merv has been hooked on birds.  On a trip to Mount Cook with a school party as Art Teacher, he encountered a film making group focused on hang gliding.  “Part of the experience is to fly wing tip to wing tip alongside hawks and to thermal with them.   I like to think that these experiences have helped me to portray birds in flights and to understand their anatomy, habits and characteristics.”
